In the heart
of Alpilles mountains, about 1000 years before J.C, Greeks founded this place,
then Romans took over and now the present walkers stroll along the ruins of this
prestigious past.
But Saint-Rémy, is
also a lot of sun-dazzled lanes, shadowed terraces and the superb market on every
wednesday which has kept the true eternal provençal memory.

A
visit in the historical center allows you to discover the village through noticeable
architectural bases, to travel in the history of Provence and to become imbued
with the typical Provençal atmosphere at the corner of the narrowed lanes, the
fountains and the shadowed squares.
Ruins
of Glanum (Vestiges de Glanum).
Thousand years before J.C, Ligures have selected
to lodge here, at the beginning of the age-old way which weaves through the Alpilles
mountains, ruling the traffic with the opulent wealth of the north lying campaign.
Barbarians then Romans follow them, controlling to the magnificence of the place.
To
day, Glanum is one of the major antic sight in the southpart of France, as well
as Vaison la Romaine, Pont du Gard, Nîmes....

After
his ear has been cutted, Van Gogh arrived on May 1889 in Saint Rémy de Provence
coming from Arles, to be "jailed" according his will to the Asile Saint Paul de
Mausole.
Fascinated by the quality of
the light and the intense beauty of the landscapes which he discovers, very inspired,
happy and relieved of meeting again a peaceful atmosphere of the nuns and nurses
who lodge him. He will paint more that 150 canvas and many drawings during one
year.
