MARSEILLE

Le Vieux Port

It is the ancient Lacydon where 600 years before J.C., explorers from Phocée landed before the establishment of Marseille. In the heart of the city and in the heart of the life of the inhabitants of Marseille, Le Vieux Port is protected by two impressive fortifications : the fortress of Saint Jean and the fortress of Saint Nicolas.

Le Vieux Port exposes two very different banks. While the one evokes the past inherited from the ancient arsenal of galleys and exposes beautiful buildings, the other one is a new district, reconstructs post-war years around monuments stayed in place such as the Town hall, the Museum of Old Marseille...

Abbaye Saint Victor

This abbey was built in the V th century on the grave of Holy Victor, a Roman officer who, having refused to sacrifice to the heathen Gods and having contributed to propagate the Christian faith, undergone martyr towards the end of the II d century. The bishop of Marseille "Procule" ( 381-418 ) asked at the monk Jean Cassien to establish this convent.

The abbey of Holy Victor sheltered the sarcophaguses of the Holy innocents, the fragments of the Cross of Holy André, clothes of the virgin and Holy Madeleine. Destroyed by Sarrasins in 923, the church was rebuilt by the Benedictines.

Basilique Notre Dame de la Garde

Perched on a hill, it is the highlight of the city (154 m).

The basilica Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde (XIXth century) dominates the Vieux Port of Marseille. Built by ESPERANDIEU between 1853 and 1864 in the romano-Byzantine style, it replaces a chapel which dated 1214. The combination of the styles Roman and Byzantine surprises the viitors and makes the charm of the basilica. The bell tower, 46m high, is surmounted by a statue gilded with golden sheets and called affectionately "La bonne mère" (the good mother).

It is in a sense a symbol, the emblem of Marseille that the travelers track down at their arrival. It is also a point from where we can embrace the extent of the city.

Palais du Pharo

(Palace of Pharo)

It is from here that we have the most beautiful point of view on the Vieux Port.

At the foot of the palace, well before its construction, we came here in gondola from the quays of the Port to savour fishes particularly in animated shops (guinguettes).

Le Palais du Pharo

It is Napoleon III, seduced by the panorama which we embrace from this cape, who asked that we build him here a residence "foot in the sea". Marseille, grateful to its emperor to whom it owes its new port, offers him the ground. The architect Lefuel, the creator of the Palace of the Louvre, draws this building with a simple architecture but respecting the status of the emperor.
